Here’s what’s in store:
Welcome to Guatemala
Get excited; it’s arrival day! You will be transferred from the airport in Guatemala City to our accommodations in Antigua.
For our welcome dinner we will visit a literal hidden gem in the middle of Antigua, Uuuhmami is a closed door restaurant that feels as much like dining at a professionally-designed speakeasy, as much as it feels like having dinner at a friend's house. With an incredible playlist, interesting food, delicious wine, and a four-course fixed menu, you're sure to leave with a full stomach and an inspired mind. It's the perfect way to welcome you to Antigua, so let's raise a glass to a week of adventures to come.
You will have the opportunity to visit a cute speakeasy for a nightcap should you feel called!
DAY 1
Hunt, cook, savor life!
We will begin with coffee at a locally owned boutique café and a brief overview of Guatemalan history. After we’ve gained some historical knowledge and cultural context, we will enjoy a guided walking tour with a bilingual local guide. Finally, we will divide into groups of three to four people to complete a scavenger hunt. This scavenger hunt is designed to push you just a little outside your comfort zone as you navigate the city.
Then we will visit Antigua’s incredible indoor/outdoor market to learn all about Guatemalan fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, seafood, dairy products, herbs, and spices while we purchase fresh food directly from local growers to use in our cooking class. During this interactive class, you will learn about traditional Guatemalan food and cooking techniques passed down over centuries.
We will then have time for a siesta and a beautiful group dinner.
DAY 2
Cup of Joe & Side of Jade
Get off the beaten path for a unique coffee tour with our friend Don José. Here, he will teach us about all the steps involved in making your morning cup of joe - from cultivation, harvest, processing, all the way to roasting and preparing! After our time at Don José's coffee plot, we will return to his house to enjoy a delicious pepián prepared with love by Don Jose’s family members. We will finish our time with Don José and his family by enjoying a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
In the afternoon, we will visit this woman-owned studio to participate in a hands-on workshop in which you will make your own unique piece of jade jewelry to take home.
Then we will visit our favorite stands and tiny comedores in the towns surrounding Antigua to savor the best búfalos, shucos, chalupas, and chocolate, all while supporting small local businesses.
DAY 3
Marshmellos over Lava Rock
Our morning starts the approximately 75-minute journey to the famed Pacaya Volcano, situated southeast of La Antigua. Once we’ve arrived it’s roughly a 1.5 to 2-hour hike up this active volcano.
Upon arriving at the summit, we’ll visit a small jewelry stand that sells beautiful items made by local artisans utilizing volcanic rock and ash from previous eruptions in 2010 and 2014. Here we will roast marshmallows over lava rock and enjoy a picnic lunch before beginning our descent. Horses are available to rent if you prefer not to hike. Approximately $13 each way.
After a movement filled morning, we will dip into the refreshing climatized pool, step into a dry and wet sauna circuit, and enjoy a relaxing massage. After an afternoon at Casa Santo Domingo, we promise you'll leave relaxed and rejuvenated.
DAY 4
Culture & connection
We will explore the vibrant culture and rich history of Chichicastenango on our guided tour of the famous market (largest in Central America, churches, and cemetery. The cemetery, which is adorned with colorful flowers and adorned tombs, offers a window into the town's spiritual beliefs and practices.
In the evening, we will set up camp under a sky full stars for a special evening in Guatemala's beautiful countryside. After we settle in, guests have the option to participate in a Fire, Temazcal, or Cacao Ceremony with a local curandera. Take part in one of the these unique and special traditions, which are all integral parts of Guatemalan culture. Each ceremony, rooted in tradition and reverence, invites participants to embrace the profound power of ritual and cultural appreciation.
DAY 5
Weaving Kinship
In the morning, we will be traveling via boat to the town of San Juan la Laguna. Here, we will enjoy a fresh, homemade meal at Licor Marrón. Here, we'll dine on typical Guatemalan dishes such as pepián, pulique, caldo de res, and tamales, depending on the season. We will visit a women’s led textile cooperative, Casa Flor Ixcaco is a truly inspiring and incredible example of empowered female indigenous entrepreneurs who are using their talents and traditions, on their terms, to bolster their economy and share their heritage proudly. During the workshop, the artisans share with us generations-old techniques and tell stories of intricate patterns that reflect Mayan heritage and modern creativity as we make our very own piece!
We will enjoy an evening of cultural immersion and exchange during your homestay in San Juan la Laguna. Engage in heartfelt conversations, discovering the traditions and rich history of the lake and experience the warmth and hospitality of our friends This immersive experience fosters a deep connection with the vibrant Guatemalan community, leaving you with a look into Guatemala that many tourists will never experience.
DAY 6
Nature is Magic
In the morning, we will have several different options for hikes and excursions that you can choose from.
In the afternoon, we have the privilege of visiting the remarkable Asociación Qómaneel nestled within the scenic beauty of Lake Atitlán. This inspiring project is led by women, including midwives, healers, and bone doctors, who generously share their knowledge of medicinal plants indigenous to Guatemala and beyond. Led by María or Lucía, we'll delve into the fascinating world of approximately 15 different plants, exploring their properties, benefits, and methods of preparation. You will have the opportunity to purchase items from their shop afterwards.
We will then board a boat to make our way to the gorgeous Hotel Atitlan.
DAY 7
Artful Hands, Scenic Lands
This morning we will head to Atitlán Nature Reserve. This is the ideal spot for immersing yourself in the beauty of nature. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the reserve's three main trails and discover a small waterfall. Keep your eyes peeled for Spider monkeys and Coatis, and don't miss the opportunity to explore the captivating butterfly garden.
Then you will immerse yourself in the rich world of traditional Guatemalan ceramics with a visit to San Antonio Palopó. Here, we'll embark on a journey through a small artisan workshop. Engage in meaningful conversations with the masters of their craft, celebrating their expertise and the cultural significance woven into each piece of pottery.
We will end this day with our Farewell dinner.
DAY 8
Farewell Feels, Helicopter Thrills
Get ready for a once in a lifetime flight as we take off in helicopters from a private helipad in Panajachel! Enjoy the 25-30 minute flight to Guatemala City, as we fly over the beautiful Guatemalan countryside, taking in volcano views, farmland, and, of course, flying over the deepest lake in Central America, Lake Atitlán! We'll land on a helipad at the airport, so be sure to have your camera out and ready to snap photos of this incredible experience.
It's time to bid farewell to Guatemala for now! Upon arrival in Guatemala City, you can either catch your flight home or we can arrange for any additional nights in Guatemala City on your behalf.
